I hear this all the time: "I created a lead magnet. I set up a landing page. I shared it on social media. And... nothing. Where's my traffic? Where are my leads?"
If that's you, I want you to know — it's not that your lead magnet is bad. It's not that your content isn't good enough. And it's not that lead generation doesn't work.
It's that nobody showed you the full picture. They showed you the after — "I got 500 signups from my free guide!" — and you thought the guide did the work. It didn't. The guide was step one. There were about fifteen steps behind it that nobody talked about.
Lead generation takes at least 60 days to see steady results. Honestly, it can take closer to 90 days to get everything flowing. And the reason it takes that long isn't that the tools are slow. It's because building the system behind the tools is where the real work happens — and it's the work most people stop doing before they see results.
Here's what I mean by "the full picture."
Most people build a lead magnet — a PDF guide, a checklist, a free webinar — and then wait for people to find it. When nobody shows up, they assume it didn't work, and they move on to the next thing. They try a different lead magnet. A different platform. A different approach. And none of it actually works.
The tool is only the first step. You need a separate marketing process that funnels people INTO that lead tool. That's the work. And that's what most people quit before they get results. They only saw the "after" of the picture. They heard "you need a lead magnet" and thought "great, I have one now, where's my traffic?"
Your traffic doesn't come from the lead magnet. Your traffic comes from everything you do to put that lead magnet in front of the right people.
And here's the part that takes patience: most people are going to stalk you for a while before they sign up for anything. They need to see you in action. Read about you and your business. Interact with you in small ways. Comment on a social media post. Listen to a podcast episode. Click around your website. This nurturing process can take days or weeks, and it's happening in the background, so you're not even aware of it.
So instead of building one lead magnet and hoping it carries all the weight, you need to build bonds with your potential clients. Do it in ways that encourage them to get to know you over time.

Work Backwards
Here's how I build a lead generation system. I start at the end and work backwards. This makes sure no connections are missing.
Step 1: Start with the action you want someone to take. What's the goal? Book a discovery call? Enroll in a course? Sign up for the group sprint? Get clear on the destination before you build the road.
Step 2: Identify the lead tool. What's the thing that gets them one step closer to that action? A webinar that teaches part of your framework? A downloadable guide that solves a specific problem? A free challenge that gives them a quick win?
Step 3: Identify the source of the leads. How are people going to find that lead tool? Social media content? Blog posts? YouTube videos? Podcast appearances? Collaborations? This is the marketing that most people skip.
Step 4: Build the connections between each step. When someone downloads your guide, what do they get next? Is there an automated email series that introduces them to your other content? If someone downloads your guide and then hears nothing from you for two weeks, you lost them.
When you work backwards, you can see every handoff. You can spot where someone might fall through the cracks. And you build the system before you need it — instead of scrambling after the fact.
A Real Example — How We're Doing This Right Now
Let me show you exactly how this works with something we're building at Vegan Mainstream right now, a Done-With-You AI service.
I worked backwards from the destination, which is: Client books a Done-With-You AI engagement.
The lead tool is a webinar that teaches part of our framework – real value even if someone never buys. After the live event, it goes to YouTube so it keeps working.
The sources are multi-channel: Reels, Shorts, blog posts, YouTube videos, a downloadable guide. But here's the key — I don't roll them all out at once. One new piece every 2–3 weeks. This keeps me from being overwhelmed, gives me time to learn what's working, and builds an ecosystem over time instead of rushing to create everything and hoping something sticks.
The connector is email. Once someone joins the list, a 3-part automation introduces them to everything else – the webinar reply, the guide, the videos. Every piece of content gets an evergreen life instead of being posted once and forgotten.
Here's what I want you to take from this
Lead generation is not an event. It's not "I launched a webinar and got 50 signups." It's a system that compounds over time. The webinar feeds the email list. The email list introduces the guide. The guide builds trust. The trust leads to a discovery call. Every piece supports every other piece.
And you don't need to build it all at once. Pick your destination. Build one lead tool. Launch one source. Connect them through email. Then add the next source in three weeks. And the next one three weeks after that. In 90 days, you won't have one lead magnet sitting on a landing page hoping for traffic. You'll have an ecosystem where everything feeds everything else.
Stop starting and stopping new tactics. Pick two lead generation approaches. Map how they'll create leads. Stick with them long enough to actually see results.
YOUR ONE THING THIS WEEK:
Your one thing this week: pick the ONE service or offer you most want to generate leads for. Then work backwards:
What's the action you want someone to take? (Book a call? Buy a course? Join the sprint?)
What lead tool would get them one step closer? (A webinar? A guide? A challenge?)
What's ONE source you'll use to drive people to that lead tool? (Social media content? A blog post? A podcast appearance?)
Write those three answers down. That's your lead gen plan. Not five tactics you'll half-finish. Three clear steps you can actually build over the next 30 days.
Reply and tell me what you chose. I want to see your backwards map.

P.S. When I started this newsletter, I said it was an experiment, and I didn't know if it would work. Ten issues later, I know it does — because of you. The replies, the poll responses, the people who've told me they actually did the one thing. You made this real. Thank you. And we're just getting started.
